Theom was founded in Dec 2020 by an experienced founding team with extensive backgrounds at Google, Yahoo, and Cisco. These security practitioners, who had previously been the creators of Tetration Analytics, one of the first Zerotrust cloud security platforms, united their expertise and experience to build cutting-edge solutions for protecting and governing enterprise data in the cloud.
With their deep knowledge of security, data engineering, and machine learning, the founders embarked on a mission to develop an AI-driven Data Access Governance and security platform to revolutionize how organizations manage and safeguard their sensitive data. Theom was born as the culmination of their collective wisdom and dedication. From the beginning, Theom was architected to be a comprehensive platform that can run a plethora of data & security-centric use cases on a foundation of core services, libraries, and engines. This also reflected the founders belief that the developments in Data and its ecosystems will eventually reflect and converge with similar trajectories in Application management, resourcing, visibility, quality, and creation (CI/CD).
From the beginning, Theom's founding team understood the importance of securing data in the cloud era. They aimed to provide organizations with a comprehensive solution that would enable them to effectively manage, control, and monitor access to their valuable data assets. With their unique backgrounds and expertise, the founders were well aware of the challenges enterprises face in protecting their data, and they were determined to address these challenges head-on.
Theom's primary goal was clear—to ensure that the right people had access to the right data at the right time, minimizing the risks of data breaches and ensuring compliance with stringent data protection regulations. Leveraging their experience in building and scaling up Tetration Analytics, the founding team set out to create a platform that would seamlessly integrate within enterprise data lakes and warehouses, providing superior governance and breach detection capabilities without the need to transfer any data out. By adopting a data-centric approach, the team recognized that securing access to data required focusing on the data itself rather than solely relying on securing the systems and networks that housed it. They designed Theom to operate within the customer's data clouds, leveraging advanced machine-learning techniques to gain deep insights into both encrypted and clear text data. This approach enabled Theom to build intelligence and proactively detect and mitigate risks, all while ensuring that data remained within the customer's jurisdiction.
What truly sets Theom apart is its ability to detect attacks on cloud data lakes and warehouses and map them to the widely recognized MITRE ATT&CK framework. This advanced capability enabled organizations to address potential breaches proactively, align their security efforts with industry best practices, and stay one step ahead of cyber threats.
Theom's founders also recognized the need for secure data sharing with external parties. With Theom, enterprises could confidently collaborate and share data on platforms like Snowflake and Databricks, thanks to its controlled and safe sharing capabilities. Unlike older proxy-based technologies that couldn't extend Data Governance beyond the initial control point, Theom seamlessly ensured that Data Governance was consistently applied to intra- and inter-company data access, even in clean rooms. This capability became increasingly crucial as inter-company data exchange became more prevalent. Moreover, Theom empowers organizations to generate comprehensive compliance reports, demonstrating their adherence to various data protection regulations, including NIST, HIPAA, HITRUST, and CIS. These reports were tangible evidence of organizations' commitment to data security and compliance, instilling trust in their stakeholders.
With support for platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, Azure, and AWS, Theom has enabled organizations to adopt a unified and consistent approach to access governance across their data clouds.
